2009 Call for Board Candidates
Interested in driving the direction of SBS?  Consider a run for office.  SBS is looking for visionary leaders to run for seats on the Board of Directors.  The Board’s role is to think strategically, set policy, and define scientific direction essential to ensuring the organization’s continued relevance.  Candidates must be current members of the Society who bring real-world experience to the organization.  The term for board members is three years, starting at the annual meeting (April 2009).

Involvement in strategic planning, setting the direction of budget and programs, and executive level interactions give board members experience that enhances their professional development.  Interacting with SBS members through many networking activities, such as SIGS, committees, conferences, and symposia also enhances the experience of board members.

For more information or a self-nomination form, please contact Karen Costanzo at kcostanzo@sbsonline.org or 203-743-1336 x109.

Self-nominations are due to SBS by October 6, 2008.

If you are versed in the science and technology of the biomolecular sciences, with proven leadership performance, there is still time to give this exciting opportunity a try.

11th Annual MipTec Conference
October 14-16, 2008, Basel Congress Center, Basel, Switzerland
MipTec, Microscopic Integrated Processing Technology, will emphasize the basic science and technology of drug discovery.
Keynote speakers include: Richard Eglen of Perkin Elmer, Mark Fishman of Novartis Pharma AG and Lee Babiss of Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd.

In order to allow as wide a range of academic and industrial participation as possible, MipTec is offering free on-line registration at (www.miptec.com).  Registration allows access to the main MipTec meeting, a number of parallel events including industry sponsored user groups; biotechnology events such as the Life Sciences week; and scientist-organized events such as the high-content screening user group and (unless it’s one or the other) the Systems-X meeting  (a Swiss initiative on the very important topic of systems biology).

This year MipTec has expanded its role, serving as a platform to showcase the city of Basel as a European center for Life Sciences.  This is made possible through partnerships with a number of European academic, industrial and social groups.  The importance of MipTec to the local area has been recognized by the local government that is helping with organizing the event. Industrial groups such as the trinational (Swiss, French and German) BioValley organization and Toolpoint have lent their support to MipTec, recognizing the critical mass such an event gives their efforts in reaching out to customers, biotechs, venture capitalists and basic scientists.  MipTec also acts as a focal point, bringing academic groups, such as the Systems-X initiative, together. These groups all contribute to MipTec showcasing the different stakeholders in this dynamic region, which continues to develop as one of the leading European Life Science clusters.  For more information visit the MipTec Website
